On making (and wearing) a uniform

Before I owned Make It Sew, I had a job that required me to wear a uniform to work every day. The pants weren’t great and the top wasn’t any better. When I took that job and told a good friend that I would we wearing a uniform she couldn’t believe I’d tolerate it. “But you express your creativity with your clothes.” It didn’t bother me; after all, I’m more than my job.

Harrison shirt from Colette is an ideal short sleeved uniform top for me.

It wasn’t long, though, before I was sewing nearly everything I wore outside of work. I still do, and part of my current job as fabric shop owner involves learning about the fabrics and patterns that we sell at Make It Sew.

And the more I sew garments, the more I crave wearing a uniform.

No, I’m not going to go back to those scratchy polyester pants. But I have found that what I want to wear is actually a short list. And 12 year old fashion conscious me would be shocked that 2022 me likes wearing button-up shirts.

Camp Shirt in hemp/cotton

I just finished sewing the Liesl & Co. Camp Shirt and then adjusted the princess seams in my flannel Harrison from Colette. They are both great patterns and different styles on the button-up shirt spectrum.

I’ve got some plans to make a Grainline Archer with some really beautiful bird print poplin that came in this fall from Monaluna. Monaluna fabrics are all organic and the poplins are luxurious. But maybe I should plan to make a short-sleeved button up since the pandemic seems to drag out all of my fun sewing projects.
