Fabric Feature: Knits

There’s a leggings class coming up at Make It Sew and you may be asking yourself, “What fabric would I use to make leggings?”

So I thought I’d share a few of my thoughts on knit fabrics — specifically some that we stock.

Andover Knits

Two of our favorite Andover Knits colors

We shared some thoughts on this fabric back in 2019. It’s a great choice for people who are just starting out sewing with knits because it’s not super-stretchy so it behaves sort of like a woven fabric while you are sewing it. On the other hand, because it’s not super-stretchy, there isn’t much recovery — so we don’t recommend this one for leggings or another project that depends on stretch/recovery.

Cotton/Lycra Knit

This one is a favorite for leggings. We carry some from a couple of different makers (Art Gallery and Robert Kaufmann for two). The percentage of lycra varies and so, then, does the percentage of stretch. For those new to sewing with knits, this material isn’t difficult when proper care is taken: remember, when sewing with knits, it’s important to use ball-point or jersey needles and machine stitches that stretch.

Rayon/Lycra Knit

These may have a LOT of stretch, again, depending on the percentage of Lycra, and make a pretty good legging. It’s also good for scarves, and for other drapey pieces. Sometimes this fabric is quite slinky which can make for a lovely feeling garment but also requires more care and patience when sewing.

Soft, brushed feeling, stretchy rayon blend

French Terry

This fabric has a bit more body than the ones described above, and it can vary in content and stretch. We’ve got two beautiful organic cotton French Terry fabrics from Cloud 9 Organics (hexagon print on left). Choose these for a cozy sweatshirt or similar garment that doesn’t require much/any stretch. We also have this interesting rayon blend French Terry (center) with a sweet subtle stripe. It worked really well for the Easton cowl-neck top.

And a really lovely French Terry is this soy/organic cotton/Lycra blend (on right). If you are making leggings for cooler months, this is a super choice. We stock it in black, charcoal grey, maroon, and olive. If earth-friendly fabrics are your preference, we also have two stretch jerseys that fit the bill: this mauve hemp/organic cotton blend and an organic cotton heather grey, both with a small amount of Lycra.

Do you have a favorite knit fabric to use in your sewing?
